Photo:ring ring Hippo Hardware Small Museums by Bike: Tour d' Architecture on a Rainy November day in Portland. The ride was organized by Carye Bye, Director of the Bathtub Art Museum. Ten cyclists braved the early start and rain and met at the Old Hollywood neighborhood library (now a cafe) and went on a neighborhood cruise with commentary by Carl Larson and Shawn Granton. Stops included the Hollywood Theatre, Coe Circle/Laurelhurst, Janzen Headquarters, and an former orphanage. At Floyd's Coffee shop at 10 am, we picked up two more cyclists. After caffeine and sugar, the tour's first museum stop was Hippo Hardware on Burnside. - part store, part museum, part mad house. The owner Steve, was unavailable so the very enthusiastic Tyler, head of the plumbing department, took the reigns. We spent a few minutes looking at doorknobs, and handles, before heading up to the hall of tubs, toilets, and tall scarecrows (see picture). Carye, aka the Bathtub Lady, especially enjoyed this room. Tyler explained that as far as he knew, he was THE expert on clawfoot tubs on the West coast between San Francisco and Seattle. We took a group photo with the giant former-mental hospital tub, and Tyler showed us the fancy John Douglas Royal toilet, from which the term, "The John" came from. Sadly we had to skip the lighting fixtures attic and the downstairs architectural hall as the tour was on a tight schedule because of a Bike Rally happening at noon. Onwards in the rain, to the Architectural Heritage Center. We had the place to ourselves and had a nice intro and walk around with Philip, a volunteer since the start and now a part-time employee. All sorts of stuff was on view, all salvaged from torn-down buildings plus a specific display on ornate doorknobs. Once again we ran out of time and had to rush out. Carl Larson who co-led the ride, likes architecture and history so much, we hope he'll organize a few other Tours d' Architecture! 10110010/101101101.2010 Day 178 / 365 - 27/6/10 Fuck I found a game I wanted to rent today, I popped it in the Xbox, it froze (no shock, it happens with all electronics), I go to restart it and I'm greeted with the wonderful red lights. From looking it up online, this pattern is apprently the Red Ring of Death signaling a "general hardware failure". I guess it's a good thing that the new one is coming out in a few weeks here? And here I'd jokingly thought to myself... hmmm, I bet I could get a good price if I traded in the old one. So much for that trade in! :-( Meh, crappy end to a rainy, crappy weekend. And tomorrow I get to mark exams :-p I've never marked exams before... this should be interesting.
